While the Himalaya is home to 8 of the highest peaks in the world, including Mount Everest (tallest of all), the Terai plain of Nepal is equally rich in biodiversity with a wide range of wildlife and tropical vegetation. We venture into Terai low land as we take on a Safari tour to explore the wildlife, one of the best in this subcontinent. The tour boasts of glorious bio-diversity and unique culture of the indigenous community of the region, Tharu.

We start our safari with a trip to Koshi Tappu Wildlife reserve southeast of Kathmandu. This reserve covers around 175 sq. km of wetlands with 68% grassland and a meager 6% forest and is home to 514 plant species and 716 species of wildlife. Second in our tour is the Chitwan National Park. This park, a World Heritage site, is spread across 953 sq. km area with Narayani and Rapti River forming its boundary. It is home to more than 700 species of wildlife, 68 species of mammal and more than 500 species of bird. The final trip of this tour will be that of Bardia National Park. This park covers around 968 sq. km which makes it the largest national park in the Terai region. The park is home to 839 species of flora and around 70% of the park covered with forest. It is home to over 600 species of fauna including 53 species of Mammal and over 400 species of bird.The tour includes jeep safari, nature walk, elephant back safari, canoe ride, and bird watching trips. A special heritage program will showcase the Tharu Culture at Chitwan as well as Bardia National Park. Tharus are indigenous tribe and inhabitants of this region.The best time to take on this trek is during the summer months (March to June) or during autumn (September to December).

Detail Itinerary

  • Day 01: Kathmandu Arrival

    We arrive at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. A Daewoo Travels representative will be waiting for us at the airport. Later, you go on a short sightseeing tour around Kathmandu Durbar Square before attending the welcome dinner Overnight stay at a hotel in Kathmandu.

  • Day 02: Fly from Kathmandu to Biratnagar and drive to KoshiTappu

    We start our tour with a flight from Kathmandu to the Far East plains of Biratnagar. Our agent will receive you at the airport and we will catch a ride to the Koshi Tappu Wildlife reserve, around 47km northwest of Biratnagar. Enjoy this 2-hour ride as you cross the distinct towns of Duhabi and Inaruwa. Arriving at the reserve by the Koshi River we check in to our resort and spend the night.

  • Day 03: KoshiTappu activities

    We start the day early with a jungle walk around the reserve. Koshi Tappu is a Bird watcher’s heaven with more than 400 species of birds migrating in and out every year. Take this opportunity to explore species such as the swamp partridge and Bengal florican. Post lunch, we will go on a jeep safari into the jungle exploring wildlife including marsh Gharial (crocodile), wild elephants, water buffalo (Arna), blue bull(Nilgai) among others. Overnight stay at a resort in Koshi Tappu.

  • Day 04: KoshiTappu activities

    We start the second day of Koshi Tappu tour with yet another nature walk through the reserve before boating in the Sapta Koshi River to explore the marine life esp. freshwater dolphins. We end the boat trip by the banks and enjoy a picnic lunch. We end the day driving off to Koshi Barrage, a kilometer-long bridge connecting Saptari and Sunsari districts of Nepal with gates to retain water, where we observe the sunset, locals offering prayers and fishing along the river. Overnight stay at a resort in Koshi Tappu.

  • Day 05: KoshiTappu activities in morning and drive to Chitwan National Park

    The final day of our tour at Koshi Tappu, we venture out for some more bird sightings before heading back to our resort. A late breakfast followed by a road trip to the Chitwan National Park, second destination of our Safari tour. Located some 370km west of here, it takes around 8 hours to reach this Park along East-West Highway. Overnight stay at a hotel in Chitwan.

  • Day 06: Chitwan National Park Visit & Activities

    Our first day at this park, we start off with jeep safari into the jungle with a chance to view a variety of wildlife. Be prepared with your cameras for we might spot the great Bengal tiger and one-horned rhino, highlights of this park. Post lunch we will tour the nearby Tharu village. Tharu's are aboriginal natives of this region with a vivid lifestyle. Overnight stayat a hotel in Chitwan.

  • Day 07: Chitwan National Park Visit & Activities

    The second day of our tour at this park, we start the day with a Canoe ride on the Rapti river with a chance to explore marine life, bird species, marsh mugger(Crocodile) and Gharial. We then set out on a unique safari on the back of an elephant. This will be a chance to sight different deer, rhino, wild boar, leopard among others. Elephant safari will take you up close to the wildlife that has made this park a home. Overnight stay at a hotel in Chitwan.

  • Day 08: Drive from Chitwan to Bardia National Park

    We start this day with an early breakfast followed by a road trip to the Bardia National Park. This park is 300km west of Chitwan and a 9-hour ride along the East-West highway will be our trip for the day.On our way, we'll cross the bustling Narayanghat Bazaar and head on to Nawalparasi crossing the Narayani River before arriving at this sprawling National park spread across 968 square kilometers. Overnight stay at Bardia.

  • Day 09: Bardia National Park Visit & Activities

    We start our 3-day tour with a nature walk exploring the forest and rivers with a chance of sighting rare birds and wildlife. Our guide will provide us with relevant information on habitats of wildlife as we cross various spots. In the afternoon we partake in Tharu cultural show as local folks, dressed in colorful attire, dance to folk music. Overnight stay at Bardia.

  • Day 10: Bardia National Park Visit & Activities

    We start this day with an elephant back safari into the Tiger territory with a chance of sighting the royal Bengal tiger. It is a tough ask but you generally find them by the riverside quenching their thirst. Elephant safari gives you an opportunity to get up close with the wildlife while ensuring safety. In the afternoon we will drive to the Karnali River and venture into a rafting tour in the shallow waters hoping to explore the marine life which includes Gharial crocodile, dolphins and other freshwater fish. Overnight stay at Bardia.

  • Day 11: Bardia National Park Visit & Activities

    Last day of our safari tour in Bardia, we head out into the jungle to explore the wildlife especially birds. While taking a jeep safari is comfortable, it is recommended we take this excursion on foot for maximum chances of sighting rare wildlife. Our guide will assist with best locales to spot unique species based on their habitation and relocation spots. This is followed by a trip to the nearby village where we observe the remote lifestyle of locals with meager amenities. Overnight stay at Bardia.

  • Day 12: Drive from Bardia to Kathmandu

    On this day, we wrap up our tour of the National parks and head back to Kathmandu. Unlike last time, we will head north from Narayanghat Bazaar as we connect with Prithvi Highway at Muglin and head upstream along TrishuliRiver to Kathmandu. Arriving in Kathmandu, we’ll be escorted to our trip hotel. In the evening we will have a chance to stroll around the Thamel market to pick up souvenirs. Overnight stay at a hotel in Kathmandu.

  • Day 13: Departure

    We will be seen off at the airport by one of the agents from Daewoo Travels. Catching our flight back, we reminisce this short yet enticing experience in this beautiful land of diversity and natural beauty.
