Upper Dolpo Region is a remote and an isolated area of western hills of Nepal situated between the Tibetan plateau and the Dhaulagiri Himalayan range and is the highest populous land of western Nepal. Upper Dolpo mirrors the curious and divine aspects in the hidden canyon of western Nepal. This region is one of the exclusive paths for trekking and the views are still pure as it was opened to international tourism only after 1989. The lifestyle, arts, and traditions adopted here are quite similar to those of Tibet. Dolpo, a land beyond the Himalaya, fancy up visions of mysterious monasteries, snow leopards, blue sheep and giant bird Himalayan Griffon Vulture which is inherited under SheyPhoksundo National Park. Trekking in Upper Dolpo get ahead of various professional and concerning high passes and the steep trail through the forest with the beautiful surroundings of fauna and floras and natural scenery. Upper Dolpo Region trekking is one of the restricted or the secured trekking regions of Nepal. It requires the special permit and the special permit is charged as for the first 10 days US$ 500 per person and US$ 50 per day person or equivalent foreign currency after 10 days. To have the trekking permit for this trek the group should at least have two people. This trekking can be the cultural tour along with the remoteness of the place and the myriad of wildlife accounts Upper Dolpo a perfect destination for the trekking We cross through the beautiful villages, a few high Himalayan passes and enjoy the deep blue, peaceful and calm beauty of Phoksundo Lake which is inside SheyPhoksundo National Park.

Dolpo has charisma and the people here still lead a classical life and are good, helpful and friendly and in Dolpo areas, the pre-Buddhist religion is still practiced and we should pass religious monuments in an anti-clockwise direction (the opposite of Buddhist practice.)

Getting there and away

Western Nepal is secluded and has less infrastructure and less access to the various facility so first, you have to get to Nepalgunj, (either by bus or plane)and most prefer plane over the bus from Kathmandu and then fly to Juphal in Dolpo district or the several days walk to Juphal.

Best season

The best time to visit Upper Dolpo is the spring (April-May) and (October-November) when weathers are mostly clear, where we can explore the beauty of the Dolpo and there is a nominal chance of snow at high altitudes.

Detail Itinerary

  • Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu

    As you arrive Kathmandu, the views of snow-capped mountain peaks greet you. A representative and driver from our office will meet you at the airport and also help you to check into your designated hotel. At the hotel, you will be briefed about your daily activities. Then we can visit the nearby places and enjoy the Nepali cuisine.

  • Day 02: Kathmandu sightseeing

    We visit various UNESCO listed sites in Kathmandu. We visit Kathmandu Durbar Square, Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage sites like Pashupatinath temple, BoudhanathStupa and SwayambhuNathStupa. After the sightseeing, we shop for accessory and other stuff mandatory for the trek. All the preparations for the trek are done on this day.

  • Day 03: Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj

    We take a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. It takes about an hour to reach the Nepalgunj and this city is the border between Nepal and India. It is a splendid place to enjoy the lands and cultures of Terai region of Nepal

  • Day 04: Fly from Nepalgunj to Juphal and trek to Dunai

    We take a flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal, the only airport in Dolpo. The flight provides us with amazing landscapes, from the flatlands to the towering hills to the barren landscape of Dolpo. From Juphal trek begins as we make our way towards Dunai. We walk past the plateau to reach Bheri River and its gorge. We eventually reach Dunai, after 4 hours of trekking, and we spend the night in Dunai

  • Day 05: Dunai to Chhepka

    The trek begins through the classical trekking route of Dolpo via Sulighar. Then we take the trekking permit to Dolpo and SheyPhoksundo National Park and after this, we are into the SheyPhoksundo National Park. our trek follows the trail beside Phoksundo River and as the trek goes on the beyond Sulighat our trek follows the trail beside Phoksundo River till Kageni. As the trek goes further, the scene in the surroundings begins to change. as we trek through the tropical forest time and again show at isolated mid-hill villages like Jutung and arrive at Shangta.FromShangta we begin to head north towards Chhepka. We put our camping for the overnight stay in Chhepka.

  • Day 06: Chhepka to Chunuwar / Amchi Hospital

    From Chhepka we exile from PhoksundoKhola and move towards the Amchi Hospital/ Chunuwar beside PhoksundoKhola- the path of famous Lower Dolpa Circuit. We then reach closer to Rechi and then hike along the riverside path to SulligadDovan and we cross the bridge and arrive Chunuwar/ Amchi Hospital.

  • Day 07: Chunuwar / Amchi Hospital to Phoksundo Lake

    We will join the direct track to Phoksundo Lake today by climbing through forests of big trees, then we descend on to Ringmo village a small and calm village. We first explore Tshowa Monastery and from here it is a short hike along the steep-sided cliffs to the Phoksundo Lake. Phoksundo Lake is famous for the magnificent blue color and the mesmerizing beauty of the lake and its surroundings.

  • Day 08: Phoksundo to Sallaghari

    From Phoksundo Lake we climb along the narrow trail cut on a cliff and to reach PhoksundoKhola on the other side of the lake we walk through the beautiful forest by the scenic beauty of the floras and faunas. This part of the trekking is one of the fantasy walks of your life and we reach Sallaghari and stay overnight in beautiful pine tree forest.

  • Day 09: Sallaghari to Kang La/ Nangdala

    From Sallaghari we asToday’s trek is relatively short; we trek for almost three hours to reach Kangla/Nangdala Base Camp 4100m. As the trek begins we escalate up the narrow way of TukKyaksa River. Then walk through crossing the river for sometime help us reach Nangdala/Kang La

  • Day 11: SheyGompa to NamgungGompa crossing Shey La Pass

    We will explore SheyGompa is also known as ShelriSumdhoGompa, the old monastery with murals inside and an ancient scroll and Shey Festival is hosted by SheyGomba and after this we follow the trails towards Shey La Pass beside SephuKhola and in this trails we can have the view of the typical Dolpo landscape-barren and charming and from top of Shey la Pass we can have the charming view of Tibet to North, Crystal mountain to West, Mustang to East and other splendid view. Then we hike towards the NamgungGompa

  • Day 12: NamgungGompa to Saldang

    Trek to Saldang starts with the slope along with a few trees. We have to climb up before going downhill to reach Saldang. Saldang is a beautiful village with lots of dry land surrounded hills. Saldang village is the biggest village of upper Dolpo Region.

  • Day 13: SaldangtoYangzerGumba

    From Saldang we walk North along the NagonKhola and reach the YangzerGumba and explore the beauty of the monastery

  • Day 14: YangzeGompa to Sibu

    We again come back to Saldang as this route is shorter and easier. From there, we pass through terraced fields, monasteries, stupas and Mani walls as we walk along a river we reach Namdo village and from again here we continue to walk and reach Sibu.

  • Day 15: Sibu to LagmoChe

    The trek starts with an easy stretch along the river and exploring the large uninhabited valley. We can have the eyes catching a view of blue sheep, snow leopards and we hike steeply to reach LagmoChe

  • Day 16: LagmoChe via Jeng La to Tokyu

    From LagmolChe we trek to reach Jeng La from where we can have the splendid view of Dhaulagari and also other snow capped mountains and after that, we reach Tokyu through Tarap Valley.

  • Day 17: Tokyo ToSisaul via DhoTarap

    After some hours of the trek we pass through the beautiful gate and reach the Tibetan village DhoTarap and we can explore the Tibetan culture, arts, tradition and Many monasteries and more. throughDhoTarap down alongside the TarapKhola we reach to the Sisaul Valley.

  • Day 18: Sisaul to LainaOdar

    We trek up to the border post between Nepal and Tibet at Serkam, and from here we hike down into narrow canyon path and hiking down we can again found the green trees and the pine trees across the Nawarpani to ChyagurKhola and through there we reach to LainaOdar

  • Day 19: LainaOdar to Lingdo (2,390m)

    Through the gorge, we pass through the various cliffs, trees and various eye-catching scenes and from LainaOdar through ChhandulGompa to Lingdo.

  • Day 20: Lingdo to Dunai (2,140m)

    Lingdo to Dunai (2,140m) We trek through the rough landscape and path carved out of rocks and reach Byasgar village and through the village, we hike down along the ThuliBeri River to the Dunai the administrative headquarter of Dolpo. In Dunai also we can visit various monasteries and local places.

  • Day 21: Dunai to Juphal Airport

    We now do the one last trek, to the airport – we hike along a path through the village of Kalagaonda and then trek through fields of barley and wheat with walnut, peach and apricot trees. A couple of hours trek from Dunai is to Juphal.

  • Day 22: Juphal to Nepalgunj flight and Nepalgunj to Kathmandu flight

    From Juphal we fly to NepalgunjInNepalgunj, we go to the hotel and have a rest. By afternoon we will fly back to Kathmandu. Our company representative will come to pick you up at the airport and will take you back to the hotel.

  • Day 23: Depart Kathmandu

    Our representative will drive you to the airport for your flight home. We really hope you’ve enjoyed this trek, it should have been a real mixture of adventure, scenery, wildlife, exercise, and culture and we look forward to trekking with you again on your return to Nepal
